How to set a looping video as your phone wallpaper

Use a vertical 9:16 clip. Many Android phones can set a video as the lock screen from the gallery; on iPhone, convert the clip to a Live Photo first, then set that as the wallpaper.

    Start with a vertical clip

Phone screens are tall, so a landscape 16:9 clip gets cropped hard and you lose most of the scene. The clips below are 9:16 vertical, made for phones, Shorts, Reels and TikTok.

    Android

Menu names differ between phone makers and Android versions, so treat these steps as a guide.

    1. Save the MP4 to your phone's gallery.
    2. On many Samsung Galaxy phones: open the video in Gallery, tap the three-dot menu, choose Set as wallpaper, then pick the lock screen. Samsung limits video wallpapers to a short length, which our 5 and 10 second clips fit.
    3. On other Android phones, open Wallpaper and style in Settings and look for a video or live wallpaper option. If there is none, a video wallpaper app from Google Play can play the MP4 on a loop.

    iPhone

iOS does not accept an MP4 file as wallpaper, but it does accept Live Photos.

    1. Use a video to Live Photo converter app from the App Store to turn the MP4 into a Live Photo saved to your Photos library.
    2. Open Settings, then Wallpaper, then Add New Wallpaper, and choose Photos.
    3. Pick the Live Photo. Make sure the Live Photo (play) control at the bottom is switched on, then tap Add.

On recent iOS versions the Live Photo plays briefly when you wake the lock screen; it does not play continuously.

    Battery

Moving wallpapers use a little more battery than still ones, mostly on the lock screen. If your battery is low, switch back to a still image until you can charge.
